About the event

CULTUREELS - Ethnographic Film Collective will present the powerful debut documentary Gaine (2019) on the 27th of April at 14.00 in Viikki Library. The film was directed by Pradeep Dhakal. The screening is free of charge and open to everyone.

This visually stunning documentary tells a story of Gandharvas, a wandering musician whose Sarangi strings weave tales of continuity and transformation.

The film brings to the hills of Bhojpur in Pashuram, Nepal, where the echoes of tradition and the winds of change converge. With breathtaking views and soul-stirring melodies, Gaine celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of change.

The film is in Nepali language with English subtitles.

Artist Kishan Gaine will be present in the screening with his Sarangi. He will share his experiences of being a musician and a storyteller, traveling through villages in Nepal.

This screening is part of a series of film screenings which features twenty powerful documentary films from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The entire programme has been curated by Film Southasia, a festival of South Asian documentaries, and the screening is made possible by ParVISMETH, a group of researchers and practitioners in the University of Helsinki who promote use of visual methods for social action and social change.
