Ivanna, 26-vuotias viiden lapsen äiti, asuu arktisella alueella Luoteis-Siperiassa. Hän elää perinteistä paimentolaiselämää ja kuljettaa porolaumaansa tundralla samoin kuten hänen sukunsa on tehnyt vuosisatojen ajan. Ilmastonmuutoksen sivuvaikutusten vuoksi suurin osa hänen poroistaan tekevät nyt kuolemaa ja Ivanna tietää, että hänen voimansa eivät riitä viiden vilkkaan lapsen sekä porojen hoitoon yksin. Ivannan puoliso Gena on jättänyt perheen aiemmin ja muuttanut lähimpään kaupunkiin toivoen löytävänsä Venäjän öljykentiltä töitä. Kaupunkielämä on kuitenkin osoittautunut haasteeksi Genalle ja hän on ajautunut alkoholin ja tappeluiden vietäväksi. Ivanna on kuitenkin valmis antamaan avioliitolleen, ja uudelle elämälle kaupungissa, mahdollisuuden. Loppujen lopuksi Ivannan on kuitenkin otettava oma ja lastensa tulevaisuus omiin käsiinsä.

 

Renato Borayo Serranon äärimmäisen intiimissä elokuvassa seurataan neljän vuoden ajan läheisesti Ivannan ja hänen perheensä dramaattisia elämänmuutoksia. Guatemalasta kotoisin oleva Serrano on asunut ja työskennellyt Venäjällä kymmenen vuoden ajan, ja elokuvan päähenkilöön Ivannaan hän tutustui sattumalta perhesuhteiden kautta. Ohjaajan henkilökohtainen suhde elokuvan päähenkilöihin näkyy elokuvan ainutlaatuisessa, samaan aikaan hiljaisessa ja intensiivisessä, tunnelmassa.

 

English: 

Ivanna, a 26-year-old mother of five children, is living in the Arctic region in northwest Siberia. She lives a traditional nomadic life, driving her herd of reindeer at the tundra as her family has been doing for centuries. But due to the environmental side effects of climate change most of her reindeers are dying and Ivanna knows that she does not manage to take care of her five lively children and the animals alone. Ivanna’s husband, Gena, has left the family earlier to live in the nearest city in the hopes of finding a job in the Russian oil fields. City life has however turned out to be a challenge for Gena, who has slid to the world of alcohol and fighting. Ivanna is still willing to give her marriage, and the new life in the city, a chance. In the end, however, Ivanna will have to take life into her own hands and secure a future for herself and her five children.

Renato Borrayo Serrano’s extremely intimate film follows Ivanna and her family closely for four years through the dramatic changes in their lives. Originally from Guatemala, Serrano has lived and worked in Russia for ten years, and met the film’s protagonist, Ivanna, through family relations. The director’s personal relationship with the people whose stories we get to follow in the film, is apparent in the unique, concurrently quiet but intense, atmosphere of the film.
