Rossana Lacayon dokumentti tuo valkokankaalle tarinan yhden ihmisen yrityksestä kohdata elämän haasteita. Dokumentti on ennen kaikkea inhimillinen kuvaus sosiaalisten suhteiden merkityksestä. Tarinan keskiössä on Gilberto, joka on elänyt Nicaraguan Churecan kaatopaikan lähistöllä 40 vuoden ajan, josta hän saa elantonsa keräämällä kierrätettävää materiaalia myyntiin torille. Muiden ihmisten kaikotessa Gilberton elämästä, koirista on tullut Gilberton seuralaisia ja hän jakaakin vähästään näille ystävilleen. Gilberton elämää ovat värittäneet taloudelliset vaikeudet, rasismi sekä yksinäisyys. Kaiken keskellä, Gilberto jaksaa jakaa syviä ajatuksiaan elämästä ja rakkaudesta.

Nicaraguan director Rossana Lacayo’s touching film brings to the screen a story of one man’s effort of facing the continuous challenges of life. The film is before all a humane portrayal of the importance of social relationships. In the center of the film is Gilberto, who has been living in the Chureca waste dump in Nicaragua for the past 40 years. He collects recyclable materials to sell at the market. When other humans distance themselves from Gilberto, dogs become his only companions. He devotes his life to them and shares the few resources he’s enjoying with these non-human friends. Gilberto’s life has been coloured by economic hardship, racism and loneliness. In the middle of it all, Gilberto continues to contemplate and share his unique philosophy of life and love.
